Nottingham’s Castle Quarter: The Birthplace of the English Civil War

Historic Beginnings

The year is 1642. King Charles I arrives in Nottingham, making his way up what we now know as Friar Lane towards the castle. As he proceeds, the townspeople of Nottingham turn their backs on him—a striking act of defiance and disrespect towards the monarchy. This open display of disapproval deeply angers King Charles.

The Raising of the Royal Standard

Atop the hill adjacent to Nottingham Castle, which overlooks what has become the park area of the city, King Charles I raises the Royal Standard. This moment marks the beginning of the English Civil War. Since then, the site has been known as Standard Hill, earning historical significance that has endured for centuries and establishing its place as a prominent location in Nottinghamshire.
